Historical Sites
Historical Sites The history of Israel dates back 1000s of years. There are no shortage of historical sites to visit. Whether biblically related, archeological, or linked to conquests and modern civilizations, Israel has everything. The most visited historical site in Israel is the Kotel (Western Wall), believed to be the closest wall to the destroyed temple, to which Jews hold sacred. Israel also processes historical places of significance to the Christian, Muslim, Baha’i, and Druze faiths. Many have left their mark in Israel. Herod the Great built his summer palace known today as Herodian. The ancient Egyptians conquered and built monuments in Jaffa. Along with Herod the Great, the Romans left their footprints on Masada. The Crusaders used Akko as their main headquarters. Megiddo has a water system dating back to the Bronze Age. Beit Shean contains the ruins of what was once a Hellenistic and later Byzantine city. Even a walk down Rothschild Boulevard, in central Tel Aviv reveals much of Israel’s modern history. No matter where one chooses to visit, in Israel there are always clues to early times.
